Oceanography Unveiled:
YEAR 2: Ocean and Climate
Oceanography Unveiled is a three-year programme, each year featuring a series of high-level seminars and summer schools, aimed at strengthening the interest of the Italian community in physical oceanography and its relationships with the planet and human health. One goal is also to foster the growth of the next generation of Italian oceanographers through regular high-quality events that can serve as both academic opportunities and a means of creating a "sense of community" among participants. Emphasis is also placed on process studies and the theoretical and quantitative aspects of the field.
The idea, initially launched by oceanographers from OGS and ISMAR-CNR, immediately received enthusiastic support from colleagues at Italian universities (Naples, Sapienza, Salento, Venice), as well as SZN, and has since grown to cover most of the Italian oceanography community. The scientific board also benefited from the energy, enthusiasm, and expertise of Professor Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli. The first cycle of seminars and the first summer school were held in Venice, focusing on 'Physical Oceanography.'
The second cycle of seminars will be held in Trieste, focusing on 'Ocean and Climate.'
TRIESTE SEMINARS: 'Ocean and Climate'
The second year of the programme is dedicated to 'Ocean and Climate' and will be held in Trieste. Each event lasts for two days, from early afternoon until the next day, beginning with a lecture on the first afternoon, followed by a session for open questions and free discussion between speakers and participants. There may be an informal dinner together, and the second lecture will be held the following morning. Seminars will take place at the ICTP campus (link), near the Miramare Castle and park.
A limited number of rooms will be available in the campus dormitory (guesthouse). A final 'diploma' will be granted to participants who attend all (or most) seminars.
The speakers for the Trieste seminars will be:
- Filippo Giorgi (ICTP/OGS)
- Pietro Lionello (University of Salento)
- Goneri LeCozannet (BRGM)
- Thomas Stocker (Oeschger Centre for Climate Research)
- Eelco Rohling (Utrecht University)
- Raffaelle Ferrari (MIT, Boston)
- Ric Williams (University of Liverpool)
Target candidates
Oceanographers, those with PhDs in the relevant field, Masters students in the field.
