Overview
The Deep Blue project aims at developing skills, building capacities, and enhancing the geopolitical dialogue in the Western Mediterranean region through increased international scientific cooperation (Science Diplomacy).
It focuses on the main concerns related to the sustainable Blue Growth in the marine environment, such as the development and sharing of tools for monitoring and assessing environmental impacts of specific maritime activities and the use of marine spatial planning through the ecosystem-based approach.
Objectives
The objectives of the Deep Blue project are to:

Foster Euro-Mediterranean cooperation for a sustainable Blue Growth

Boost public and private synergies for new innovative ideas for sustainability

Share knowledge, methodologies and data in marine sciences

Promote brain circulation and mobility for blue jobs

Raise awareness on blue economy challenges

Increase the visibility of the scientific work in fields related to Blue Growth
Context
The project is funded by the European Maritime and Fishery Fund (EMFF) and the European Agency for Small and Medium-sized enterprises (EASME) within the framework of the Sustainable Blue Economy Call 2017 which aims to accelerate the development of the blue economy in the Mediterranean through closer cooperation between public and private maritime stakeholders supporting skills, innovation, entrepreneurship as well as job diversification and local communities' empowerment.
Activities
The project integrates the activities set for the 2018-2020 of the Western Mediterranean Forum for Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Dialogue 5+5) endorsed by all member countries (Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia) within the framework of the Work Plan of the Tunis Declaration approved during the inter-ministerial conference held in March 2017.
Partners from Italy, Spain and Tunisia with the support of local stakeholders will strive to develop education and training paths aiming at creating an advanced shared knowledge and common methodological ground on the key sectors of Blue Economy in the Mediterranean basin while fostering North-South and South-South cooperation among public and private stakeholders.
